Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis has many functions that are of particular interest of people in recovery. It a liver protectant, it fights fatigue, it detoxifies they body and liver in particular, it regulates the nervous system, improves gastrointestinal function, and helps with sleep.
Radix et Rhizoma Valerianae (valerian root) has antispasmodic, ant anxiety, sedative and hypnotic abilities. People have reported in studies that they slept better, deeper and woke less times during the night. It is similar to an herbal benzodiazepine. It has a shorter “acting” life, but is safe and non addictive.
Albizza is used as an anxiety and sedative herb, Semen Zizyphi Spinosae, Arillus Longan, Radix Polygalae all have sedating and tranquilizing effects. Albizza has been known in medical circles as the “herbal Prozac”, or the “herbal Xanax”.
Radix Ginseng, thought in America as a stimulant is really an herb used for thousands of years as an herb to help with stress, increase mental function and the ability to keep the body at a homeostatic state. Ginseng helps the body stay a “neutral strong” state so you can sleep and stay asleep.
Ziziphus spinosa seed (suan zao ren) is used to treat insomnia, palpitations, anxiety, excessive sweating, and poor memory problems. Suan Zao Ren can be taken as directed through the day and will help with sleep naturally. Typically the ‘insomnia’ or sleep problems this herb will help with, will be trouble sleeping due to anxiety, fidgeting, restlessness, and night sweating.
Biota Seed (Bai Zi ren) the seeds are usually used as a sedative, and are often a component of various shen, or spirit, tonics. Among the conditions biota seed is used to treat are irritability, insomnia, memory loss, anxiety, constipation and night sweats.
Radix Polygoni Multiflori (ye jiao teng) Calms the spirit, nourishes the heart and blood, treats insomnia, irritability, dream disturbed sleep from yin and/or blood deficiency.
Melatonin a natural occurring sleep aid that your pineal gland produces, it aids in sleeping.
Dosing is as follows:
- 8-10 pills at night, if you’re feeling too groggy or sleepy in the morning, you can lower your dose accordingly.
- If you have too much stress and can’t “unwind” at night you can take a mid day dose of 4-6 pills, and then follow that with your nightly dose.
